Mothlight: An Eco-Poetry Workshop with Melanie Hyo-In Han

The first of the Cocoon Residency events!

Why are moths drawn to light? And what would a garden look like if you saw it the way a moth does?

Moths carry a lot of meaning across cultures (as messengers, as omens, as signs of something passed down) and they also carry something more literal: hidden viruses that live alongside them, largely unseen. We'll use both of these ideas as starting points for writing. In this workshop, we'll do collaborative and individual writing activities, including one where you try seeing (and writing) from a moth's point of view.

This free workshop is for anyone curious about nature (no prior writing experience is needed), and everything you write is yours to keep but you're also warmly invited to contribute a piece to the collaborative zine/online portfolio Melanie Hyo-In Han will be creating as part of her residency at Potager.

Born in Korea and raised in East Africa, Melanie Hyo-In Han (she/her) moved to the U.K. where she recently completed a Ph.D. in Creative Writing and is the author of Passing Notes in Secret, Abecedarian: Banff, Canada, My Dear Yeast, and Sandpaper Tongue, Parchment Lips. Nominated for Pushcart Prizes, Han has received awards from “Boston in 100 Words,” Valiant Scribe, The Lyric Magazine, and elsewhere.
