A short talk and display of our Greenspace Voxels model at an event on the uses for virtual reality. These are minecraft and physical models of city greenspace, using voxel data from full-waveform LiDAR (laser scanning landscapes from aircraft). From an environmental research perspective, looking at greenspace in three dimensions allows a new, more complete perspective on habitat connectivity and the use of space by wildlife. From an urban planning and architectural perspective understanding the impact of a new build on a landscape in three dimensions provides a valuable tool for moving towards sustainable practices. The event is free to …
Recent world events and concern over ‘fake news’ and ‘post-factualism’ have highlighted the difficulties encountered when trying to find trustworthy sources of information. The ability to judge the reliability of different sources of information is a skill that can be learned. The AccessLab project aims to improve access to and the judgement of information, through direct citizen-scientist pairings. The AccessLab project launches with a workshop pairing artists (practitioners and researchers, particularly those who have community engagement as a core part of their practice and/or who work with data) with early career science researchers. The participating artists will be able to …
Collaboratively crafting viruses from different mediums, developing our understanding of how genetics changes a virus' structure, and how this structure changes a virus' ability to jump between different host species.Merging biologists with craft practitioners and researchers, we'll lay the foundations for the wider Viruscraft project - a tangible interface game that could evolve in any direction.Expect sessions with virologists and basketweavers, potters and programmers, sketchers and geneticists - everyone a little out of their comfort zone and nurturing their beginner's minds.Email us at kernow[at]fo.am if you'd like be involved - all are welcome, particularly if you can …
We'll be showcasing our Greenspace Voxels project at the Newlyn Art Gallery as part of a week of Palace of Cultures events curated by the Keiken Collective. We have been visualising cities in 3D using minecraft and physical models, using voxel data from full-waveform LiDAR (laser scanning landscapes from aircraft). We are looking at ways to visualise only the greenspace in cities, with all the buildings and roads removed - for environmental connectivity research and more thoughtful urban planning. The event takes the form of a 40 minutes of talks followed by time to explore the physical and digital …
The FoAM Kernow studio will be open for the evening. There is much to celebrate: - thanking all our collaborators and friends who we worked with in 2016,it was a diverse and busy year - welcoming new FoAM member Aidan Weatherill, who joins us in February to help with our research tools and citizen science projects - starting with Mongooses... - welcoming back FoAM resident Jo McCallum, who has been in Japan and Australia for 6 months learning about weaving sustainable and biomimetic architecture We'll have some of our projects out to play with, and some rum and cocktails to …
Tanglebots is a workshop for children with autism and their families. We will combine harvesting components from e-waste toys (motors, gears, electronics), and using visual programming (Scratch) to control these components, to create robots that make tangles. Tanglebots are prototype weaving machines. The weaving focus allows us to ground the workshop in loom technology and demonstrate the challenges of manipulating thread, with its enormous history of technological development. Each family is provided with the training and materials required to create their own. This event is part of British Science Week, and is run in collaboration with the Cultural Minds …
Join us for a talk on our Greenspace Voxels project at the Environment and Sustainability Institute. We have been visualising cities in 3D using minecraft and physical models, using voxel data from full-waveform LiDAR (laser scanning landscapes from aircraft). We are looking at ways to visualise only the greenspace in cities, with all the buildings and roads removed - for environmental connectivity research and more thoughtful urban planning.Karen Anderson, a researcher who uses unmanned aerial vehicles for environmental research, will introduce the project 'F3UES', waveform lidar, voxels and suburbia. Stefano Casalegno will explain the complexities of visualising …
AlgoMech is our new international festival of "Algorithmic and Mechanical Movement", bringing performances, talks and hands-on workshops to Sheffield UK from the 12th-19th November 2016.This new festival brings together a diverse range of art forms and mixes them up to present a creative mosaic of machines, live coding, music, dancing and power tools. From clog dances that mimic industrial looms, to techno music created with mechanisms built during the performance; cellos are turned into computers; textile patterns become musical compositions - this hand-crafted programme features performances and events that aim to challenge and inspire. Audiences will also have the …
A special version of Dazzlebug is being exhibited at the Anchorage Museum in Alaska as part of their Camouflage: In Plain Sight Exhibition running from the 28th October 2016 to the 5th Febuary 2017.
FoAM Kernow will be launching Sonic Kayaks at the British Science Festival in SwanseaThe Sonic Kayak is a musical instrument with which to investigate nature. Kayaks rigged with underwater environmental sensors generate live music from the marine world, providing the paddler with an extra dimension of senses with which to explore the underwater climate. Join us on the beach and have a go playing this most unique instrument. All participants must be over 18 and confident swimmers. Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing for kayaking. You can book a session here.
