A free workshop to design a new sound map for the Sonic Kayak, to make it possible for people with visual impairments to kayak independently at a lake site in Cornwall.For this event we'll be working with Access Lizard Adventure who have substantial experience in accessible kayaking, and will make sure everything we do is safe. Our woven maypole dancing robots are heading to Sheffield's Algomech festival as part of a range of Penelope related activities there. We will be inviting people to help the Penelopean robots weave on a experimental may pole during two performances at the Winter Garden on Saturday and Sunday and also doing a little talk about them at the Dancing and Brading Symposium on Friday. Viruscraft is an experiment in creating new ways to understand the invisible world of viruses. With researcher Ben Longdon at Exeter university, FoAM Kernow has been building games, simulation worlds and novel tangible interfaces that explore how viruses jump between species and evolve over long periods of time.This open play testing activity will be a chance to have a go at mutating a large virus exhibit and seeing how your newly created disease infects a world of unsuspecting creatures. Recent world events and concern over ‘fake news’ and ‘post-factualism’ have highlighted the difficulties encountered when trying to find trustworthy sources of information. The ability to judge the reliability of different sources of information is a skill that can be learned. The AccessLab project aims to improve access to and the judgement of information, through direct citizen-scientist pairings.For this AccessLab workshop, we are focusing on people who work or are otherwise involved in the Parliamentary, Council and Policy sectors. The FoAM Kernow studio will be at the Bloomsbury Festival in London on 20 October, as part of the UCL ExCiteS Citizen Science showcase. The theme for the festival this year is Activists and Architects for Change, and we'll be showing our Sonic Kayaks, Crap App and Greenspace Voxels projects.
The second of our joint FoAM-Eden Project Invisible Worlds residencies is '... and then we see if we will be friends' with Katharina Hauke and Till Bovermann of TAI Studio. The residency will take place in the new Invisible Worlds exhibition laboratory at the Eden Project, and visitors are free to drop in at any time.
