Poly Pop Up - Woven Robots (& Khipu) // 21 Feb 2026

Play with woven robots, and learn how to send messages with knots.Led by the local non-profit organisation, Then Try This, this creative activity explores how digital technology might not be as ‘new’ as we think… We'll be learning about Andean/Inca knotted string records called "Khipu". Make your own secret message to take home, and play with walking robots made from braided textiles which you can control with more knots! This workshop looks across and back at different cultures to explore the meaning of technology - with no screens involved.Poly Pop Up - Woven RobotsFully accessible venue with …

Workshop: On being formal: communal informatics, khipu technologies, extractivism, and debt. // 31 Jan 2026

We are running a workshop alongside Paola Torres Núñez del Prado and Julian Rohrhuber on the 31st January at the Epistemic Media Research Group (Institute for Music and Media) in Düsseldorf. This event will be a convergence of two areas of recent research, Andean Khipu knotted string records - knots as records of individual's duty to their society, and the peculiarities of labour accounting in historical Cornish mining. When speaking of “formalisms”, we mostly think of formulas written in a symbolic text. When speaking of “the necessary formalities”, however, we know that we may not only write, but also act …

Inca technology, woven robots and pluggable knots (Alpaca drop in session) // 14 Sep 2025

The khipu represents an example of a divergent lineage of technological development: used by diverse pre-Colombian civilizations in the Andes, it stored information in the form of knots. In this drop-by workshop in recreation with Paola Torres Núñez del Prado and Dave Griffiths, you can explore different arts technologies incorporating and inspired by khipu knots. This includes sound interfaces made by Paola as part of her doctoral research and creative practice, and their new ‘pluggable knots’ interface – large knots that can program how woven robots walk and dance around the winter garden.Location: Winter Garden, Sheffield

Alpaca 2025 - Algorithmic Pattern in the Creative Arts // 12 Sep 2025 - 20 Sep 2025

We're excited to be hosting this conference from 12-20th September 2025, with a huge range of talks, workshops and performances exploring algorithmic patterns in the creative arts. Khipu workshop at Everyday Algorithms // 22 Mar 2025

Paola Torres Núñez del Prado will be working with Alex and Dave to provide a workshop with young people where we can play a little with khipu - from knot making and tying our own khipu to experimenting with our "pluggable knots" interface, where knots can be used to make music and control woven robots. This is part of a festival at The Newbridge Project called Everyday Algorithms in Newcastle, which has been organised by our good friend and past resident, Shelly Knotts.
